Gutter & exterior cleaning in Accrington

Accrington is classic Hyndburn mill-town housing - street after street of hard-wearing red-brick terraces, many of them built from the famous Accrington NORI brick. They've lasted well, but the rooflines take a beating from the damp hillside weather, and the gutters fill faster than most people realise.

What the outside of a Accrington home is up against

The terraced stock around the town centre, Church, Milnshaw and down towards Oswaldtwistle tends to have the original guttering and tight rear access, so we set up carefully from the ground and keep a close eye on the downpipe outlets, which are a common blockage point on these older runs. Up in Baxenden and Huncoat the housing is a mix of later semis and detached homes on higher, more exposed ground, where wind-driven debris and moss on the shaded slopes are the usual culprits.

Sitting where it does on the western edge of the Pennines, Accrington gets plenty of rain, and north-facing roofs here grow moss quickly. We clear and check gutters, soft-wash fascias and soffits, remove and treat roof moss, clear drains and pressure-wash driveways and patios across the whole town - from ground level where we can, with before-and-after photos emailed after every job.

The famous Accrington NORI brick that so much of the town is built from is dense and hard-wearing, but the terraces it built were put up tight together with shared valley gutters and party-wall downpipes, and that shared plumbing is where a lot of Accrington blockages actually sit. When one house in a run lets its gutters silt up, the overflow often shows on the neighbour's wall first, so we check the whole shared section rather than just the length over one door.

Weather off the Pennine edge is the other constant. Accrington sits higher and wetter than the Ribble Valley floor, and the long, damp winters keep north-facing roofs green from autumn right through to spring, so roof moss treatment here is less a one-off and more a standing job every couple of seasons. The same conditions turn the flagged yards and ginnels behind the terraces slick with algae, and a pressure wash of a back yard or a set of steps is a common add-on when we're already on site clearing the gutters. Oswaldtwistle and Church, down in the valley, behave much like the town centre; Baxenden and Huncoat, up on the tops, get the wind-driven debris as well as the moss.

The service mix across Hyndburn follows the housing closely. In the tight terraced cores of Accrington, Church and Oswaldtwistle it's gutter clearing and downpipe rodding that come up most, usually in autumn and again in late winter, while the newer semis and detached homes in Baxenden, Huncoat and out towards Clayton-le-Moors bring more fascia and soffit soft-washing, conservatory roof cleaning and driveway and patio work. Because the terraces sit on hard, low-lying ground, blocked gullies and yard drains are a regular job here too, especially after the heavy downpours the Pennine edge is prone to. We clean wheelie bins around the area as well, which is a handy add-on when we're already on a street. Every visit is a fixed price agreed before we start and a photo report afterwards, so you can see exactly what came out of the gutters and how the downpipes and outlets look - useful on the older NORI-brick terraces, where a cracked hopper or a section of iron pulling away from the wall is easy to miss from the ground and worth catching before it starts marking the brickwork below.
